Communautique is a living lab dedicated to social and technology innovation, their action is focused on : education, new economy, digital inclusion and manufacturing. Since its creation in 1999, Communautique is acting for democratization in technology and digital industries. Recently they opened a Fablab, a workshop offering digital fabrication, enabling Montreal’s community of maker a various range of flexible computer controlled tools to prototype anything.

BRIEF

Communautique offered me to work on their new website, a platform embracing their achievements and ambitions.

The challenge was to think a new information architecture and user experience while keeping all data collected throughout the years, and adding a payment solution for their new courses catalogue.

Communautique also wished to change domain extension and go from .qc.ca to the new .quebec, and be able to easily update and add content on the new website.

We chose to use WordPress, a CMS solution easy to pick up, however WordPress demands careful support, attention to updates and backup solutions, better have an expert on your side.

SOLUTION

I started off by thinking a new information architecture, in order to prioritize and organize data. Fluidity and ergonomy were my goals, complex architecture on the inside but easy-to-navigate layouts for the user. Once the new sitemap decided I started off with mockuping wireframes to define a user experience and artistic direction in terms of user interface.

The biggest challenge was to manage redirection, changing domain while keeping all SEO juice. That 301 journey even inspired me an article, if you dare check it out : Nail those 301
